I would like to put this out there as I think it would be a really nice idea. You also should be able to set it to areas so you can chat to those close to you. I think that having this would
1. Make more people stay on for longer because they can actually do things
And 2. Make it easier to make allies as you are actually talking to the people instead of waiting ages for them to reply

The social aspect seems fine to me as is. Ever hear of an app called palringo?

Palringo seems to be app tw players use.....check it out.....pretty good and has plenty of features

From experience with other iPhone games. EVERYONE uses pal.
