If you attack someone with a lot less influence than you, can you lose the fight as a result of the don helping?
I have been trying to help a friend of mine that gets attacked 70x a day from 3 states away, but I have so much more influence than the guy I'm attacking it says 'don't pick on this guy, the don will help him' or something.

As far as I know, its level based, which typically means you'll have a lot more influence by default.

Ah. If it was Influence based you could use this as a strategy. Keep your influence super low, but keep your mod super high. Survive off attacking all the time. Build stamina instead of energy. So players with more influence couldn't beat you.
