I think a notification for skeins posting in a thread you replied in/ started would be really helpful. another good feature would be a search feature. it would be extremely helpful for the invite code section

Linking to a post .. Automatically being informed of a reply to one of your posts .. Search .. All good (and standard) features a forum should have.. But do we want Nick to spend his time doing that instead of adding to the game?

The alternative is for someone to host a forum for the community outside of the game, but that removes the ease of use and accessibility of the existing forums in game.
