Mentor System
Forums › Suggestions & Feedback › Mentor System-
Many games already have this. The theory is simple. Basically, when ever a new player starts they will have an option to choose if you want a mentor or not. A mentor should be a fairly experienced player (doesn't have to be a big huge player, just a player who has been playing for a certain time, and possibly certain stats). The mentor will guide the player around, teach him what to do, what not to do. He can answer questions. He will basically be the help forum, but better because it's interactive.

Many players start off not know squat about these kind of games, and end up being complete noobs. That's the reason why many of them leave. And they don't want to spend time reading from a screen. They want to learn from an actual player who knows things.
They could also be a reward system if the player you are teaching achieves certain goals, like mob, or a level. The reward could be some don pionts or maybe even a chance to win a loot item. Nothing too much, but it's something.

The mentor should have a quick way to contact his "trainees", like a tab or something. And once they reach a certain point in the game they are on their own. Also in order to avoid overwhelming the mentor, there should be a limit for a number of players he/she is teaching.
Finally when the "trainee" graduates, he will be able to rate his mentor which will go to the dev team. This will prevent any bad mentors.

This is actually a good idea. I've help a few low level mobsters grow in the past. And if it wasn't for the fact I had a decent mentor I'd probably have quit early on as well.

Please post your ideas on this. I think this can work, maybe the idea needs to be tweaked a little though.

If someone wants to be a mentor just to mess around with them, tell them false stuff and all that, there should be a punishment. Forum ban maybe?

What happens if you get a flood of newbs and they don't have enough mentors. Also newbs need to know a mentor is not there to fight their battles for them...

If you look in the help forum this is already in place with the Newbie Support Alliance. Many big players add basic support answers to their walls as well.

Yes, but they arnt mentors. Forget about the forums, we have seen it, only a small percentage of players actually open up the forums. If you look in the help forum this is already in place with the Newbie Support Alliance. Many big players add basic support answers to their walls as well.

In that case, that trainee could possibly be moved to a new mentor, and that previous mentor could get a warning, or they could just prevent them from being mentors. If someone wants to be a mentor just to mess around with them, tell them false stuff and all that, there should be a punishment. Some things should be player run instead of developer managed, like alliances. I think this is another of those things.

Good idea, but I find that if someone wants help then they'll find it. Also, we all have little ways of doing things that are different from player to player, meaning that not everyone will be taught the same.
Is the tutorial not good enough combined with the forums and pm's between players?
Not saying this is a bad idea, but it needs supervision to work.

Great idea

PM's might be ok, but im teaching two players right now, and it's a lot more than a few PM's. About the forums not many people actually read them, or even click on the forums button (I know it sounds crazy, but it's true)Good idea, but I find that if someone wants help then they'll find it. The info in the main help forum threads & the wiki was written by "players who know things."
Are you going to make the mentors take a test? I ask because I see people answer questions incorrectly all the time.
It also wouldn't make sense to penalize a mentor that thought they gave the right answer, but were simply mistaken (not being malicious).
Mentoring already exists; it's just done informally. I'm not sure a formal system is the way to go.
