Police Protection
If you are not capo of an area where you have turf, you will be forced to bribe the cops every hour on every turf in that area, unless you purchase police protection.
There are 2 kinds of police protection; both last for 1 week:
Global: You obtain this by spending 5 Don Points or using a consiglieri. It covers all areas where you have turf. It will also keep you from getting busted by the cops when doing missions.
Local: This is purchased with in-game money and is purchased separately for each area where you have turf. This kind of protection will NOT stop you from getting busted by the cops.
To purchase either kind, go to the Missions screen. Click on the button at the top that says, "Get Protection."

Protection Money
If a turf with higher influence covers at least half of a turf with lower influence, then the turf with higher influence will receive protection money.
For example, a 100 influence turf covering at least half of an 86 influence turf, will collect protection money.
To stop paying another player, increase your turf's inf to equal their turf's inf.
To collect from another player, make your turf's inf higher than their turf's inf.
Notes:
1) You must use looted turf upgrades to make your turf higher than 86 inf.
2) Being capo does NOT keep you from having to pay protection to another player.

In summary, police protection & paying a player protection are completely separate, unrelated things.

Some less formal things to know about loot and player protection money.
Loot Do's and Don'ts:
Don't place loot on bigger players without permission unless you are willing to part with it.
Don't place loot in an area with bigger mobsters you aren't familiar with unless you are willing to part with it.
Do place loot in areas you know to be safe and are familiar with other mobsters.
Do look for smaller players to steal loot from.We have all been caught slippin and lost loot to a bigger player. Stealin loot is part of what makes TW fun. Even if you are on the losing end. Losing loot just gives you an opportunity to haze a smaller player and share the love.
-
Player protection is a good way to increase your income and afford better weapons with your mob. Many areas have a lot of turf with influence less that 86. When surveying an area to plant turf, look around and see if there are any 84 inf turf. Plant on top of those for extra money with no loot upgrades required.
Player Protection Do's and Don'ts:
Don't take protection from bigger players without permission unless you are willing to part with your turf.
Don't take protection on very new players that can't yet build an 86 inf turf. Help them grow so they create more turf instead.Do take protection on inactive players that have 84 inf turf.
Do take protection on players that are smaller than you when you see the opportunity. -
Taxing players and being taxed by players often provides a opportunity to get to know your neighbors for good or bad. If the interaction is bad you will learn something about the other players and know who to stay away from. When its good you will often make a new friend or gain an ally.

I have never had anyone not understand what "half" meant. If you used geometry to figure put the exact percentage, I doubt anyone would understand how to get it.Mystery wrote:

Yes, I agree. Bottom line? Plant as close as you can, and build bigger than your "victim".

You don't truly pay money to yourself. If you see this happening, it's because you haven't waited the 15 minutes for the server to catch up to any changes.
